Trevor Williams: A Leader On and Off the Field in SHSU’s FBS Transition

HUNTSVILLE, TX – As Sam Houston State University (SHSU) prepares for its transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), players and coaches alike are filled with anticipation. One standout from the Bearkats’ squad, Graduate Linebacker Trevor Williams, took some time to discuss this momentous shift, the team’s ethos, and his personal journey in the college football realm.

“We’re in the midst of an exhilarating time,” said Williams, speaking to Rob Hipp on ‘Behind the Bearkats’. He elaborated on the significance of the team’s cultural identity, “You know, the whole model of Sam Houston is a measure of life is in its service… Being able to serve others and be a blessing – that’s hard to beat.”

For Williams, this upcoming transition is not just about moving into a more competitive football landscape but also realizing a personal dream. “It’s always been a goal of mine to play FBS football,” he shared. With SHSU now joining Conference USA and preparing for FBS showdowns, Williams reflects on his long tenure with the team: “From the Southland Conference to being in the WAC, and now to Conference USA and playing FBS football… I’m super proud.”

As the fall camp unfolds, Williams notices the burgeoning talent among the new faces, emphasizing the importance of healthy competition. “A lot of guys are stepping up and making plays. The intensity at practices has been commendable,” he remarked.

His leadership, both on and off the field, is palpable. The graduate linebacker is not just about athleticism; he’s also about service. Recently seen at a community event in Huntsville, Williams reiterated the significance of giving back. “A big thing for me and, I’d say, for the team, is to be willing to serve others. To interact with the community, have conversations, and grow within ourselves.”

With a matchup against BYU looming on the horizon, Williams is well aware of the challenges and rewards ahead. “The big thing is to make sure we’re progressing each day,” he emphasized, “By the time we get to BYU, we’re the best versions of ourselves.”

Before concluding, Williams sent a heartfelt shoutout to his family: “I just want to say thank y’all for supporting me in everything I do. I appreciate and love y’all so much.”

Anticipation is building among Bearkat fans. With dedicated players like Trevor Williams at the helm, the team’s future in the FBS looks promising.
