Bearkats Prevail Over Tulane in Weather-Delayed Marathon Match

Following an unexpected 20-hour delay, the Sam Houston Bearkats triumphed over Tulane with a 10-2 victory, progressing to the third round of the Baton Rouge Regional.

The match, which began at 2 p.m. on Saturday, was suspended due to severe weather conditions, including rain and lightning. The game was eventually postponed till after 10 p.m. Saturday and eventually concluded on Sunday with the Bearkats maintaining a strong 7-2 lead.

Upon the game’s resumption, Logan Hewitt took up a challenging role for the Bearkats, stepping in amidst a bases-loaded situation with two outs in the 7th inning’s peak. Despite initially trailing 3-0 against his first adversary, Hewitt succeeded in diffusing the threat with a ground out.

During the 8th inning, Justin Wishkoski solidified the Bearkats’ victory, sending a three-run shot to the dead center and pushing the lead to 10-2. Hewitt remained on the mound for the rest of the match, conceding only two base runners and recording one strikeout.

As a result of this victory, the Bearkats will play on Sunday at 8 p.m., against the loser of the LSU and Oregon State match.

Walker Janek started off the scoring for the Bearkats on Saturday with a solo home run to left center. Although Tulane briefly managed to even the score, Myles Jefferson’s RBI groundout quickly restored the Bearkats’ lead. Shortly after, Joe Redfield hit a three-run homer to the right field, boosting the Bearkats’ lead to 5-1.

Redfield’s home run marked his 100th hit of the season, joining fellow teammate Tyler Davis who also achieved the century mark in hits this season. This milestone marks the first time in the history of the school that two players have made 100 hits in a single season.

Steven Beard secured the win for the Bearkats, enhancing his seasonal record to 8-3. He delivered a commendable performance across 6 innings, allowing nine hits, one run, and bagging three strikeouts.
