On Saturday, at Johnson Coliseum, Sam Houston Men’s Basketball exacted revenge for their previous loss to Southern Utah in the Western Athletic Conference. With their stifling defense, they clinched a 64-57 win and improved their overall record to 22-6, maintaining their second place position in the WAC with a 12-4 record. Throughout the game, the score remained close until midway through the fourth quarter when the Bearkats made their move. Qua Grant, who scored a game high of 22 points, completed an old-fashioned three-point play, followed by another one minute later, putting Sam Houston up 43-35. Southern Utah retaliated with a 3-pointer, but Lamar Wilkerson came off the bench and scored a crucial 3-pointer to match it. The Bearkats’ lead extended to 54-42 when Cameron Huefner made two free throws, and Kaosi Ezeagu dunked the ball with two hands, assisted by Grant. Though the Thunderbirds managed to cut the lead to 61-57 with 29 seconds remaining, Tristan Ikpe made a pair of free throws, and Grant scored one with 10 seconds left to seal the game. Sam Houston’s next challenge is a significant away match against their rivals, Stephen F. Austin, on Wednesday at William R. Johnson Coliseum at 6:30 p.m.
