Junior Golfer at Sam Houston University Triumphs in Sudden Death Playoff to Capture Coveted Golf Title

In a thrilling finish, Bret Gray, a junior at Sam Houston University, etched his name in the annals of golfing history by becoming the first Bearkat golfer to secure the 114th Texas Amateur Championship. The victory unfolded at the prestigious Clubs at Houston Oaks on Sunday, culminating in a dramatic sudden death playoff.

Gray’s clinching par putt at the initial playoff hole catapulted him to a decisive victory, concluding with a four-day total of 11-under-par 273. Throughout the tournament, Gray displayed his dominance by leading the competition from start to finish.

In a post-tournament interview with the Texas Golf Association, Gray shared his exhilaration, “It’s a surreal moment for me. I’m truly excited and feel blessed. The day was filled with challenges, but I’m thrilled I could see it through.”

A nail-biting finish saw Gray edge out Oklahoma sophomore Jase Summy by sinking the championship-winning putt. Both players had wrapped up the final round at par, outpacing the rest of the field by a significant seven strokes.

“This marks my first-ever playoff victory,” a jubilant Gray revealed. “I’ve had two other playoff experiences, including one when I was a mere 12-year-old. My second shot onto the green was markedly better this time around.”

Gray hit the ground running on day one, posting a score of 5-under-par 66. He kept up the pressure with a 4-under 67 in the subsequent round and repeated this score in the third. Despite concluding the tournament with a 2-over 73, Gray’s cumulative performance secured his historic win.

The championship title rounds off an exceptional season for Gray at Sam Houston. The Golf Coaches of America Association named him to the NCAA Division I PING All-Region team in recognition of his remarkable performance.

Moreover, following his commendable third-place finish at the conference championships, he was bestowed the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year title. Gray further showcased his prowess by qualifying for the NCAA Norman Regional, where he placed 11th.

Gray, the first-team All-WAC selection, demonstrated his superior form this season with two victories and six top-five finishes. His notable triumphs include the Blackjack Shootout in Montgomery and the individual championship at the Bayou City Classic in Houston. This Texas Amateur win solidifies Gray’s position as a standout in collegiate golf.
