Carrying Forward a Legacy: The Fabulous Blackwood Quartet Set to Enthrall Huntsville With Soulful Gospel Harmony
HUNTSVILLE, TX – For those who yearn for the melodious sound of gospel music, there’s great news on the horizon! The Fabulous Blackwood Quartet is set to perform at Grace Baptist Church on June 16th, at 7 p.m. This event, free and open to all ages, promises an evening filled with rich harmony and uplifting messages.
Tracing its roots back to 1934, the Fabulous Blackwood Quartet boasts a rich history and reputation as one of the most respected gospel groups of all time. The original Blackwood Brothers Quartet, featuring brothers Roy, Doyle, James Blackwood, and Roy’s son R.W., made a mark in the music industry, appearing on several TV shows including The Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters, Hee Haw, and the prestigious Arthur Godfrey Talent Show in 1954.
Tragedy hit the group later that year when R.W. Blackwood and Bill Lyles died in a plane crash. However, the quartet bounced back, with R.W.’s youngest brother, Cecil Blackwood, and bass singer J.D. Sumner, stepping in. This resilience proved to critics and fans alike that the Blackwood name would continue to resonate in the world of gospel music.
Today, Mark Blackwood, Cecil’s son, carries the legacy forward. Mark joined the Blackwood Brothers Quartet in 1986, working alongside his father and many talented singers, and also played a pivotal role in producing the Grammy award-winning Blackwood Brothers albums of the early 1980s. In 2012, Mark Blackwood formed the Fabulous Blackwood Quartet.
The Fabulous Blackwood Quartet continues to tour regularly, sharing the word of Christ through song, reaching both believers and non-believers. They’ve had the honor of performing with music giants such as Willie Nelson and have also found a fan base among Elvis tribute artists.
The current line-up of the Fabulous Blackwood Quartet includes Mark Blackwood as the lead and owner, full voice tenor Tony Goforth, baritone Jason Gordon, and bass Jamison “Bucky” Blackwood, who is learning his part under the tutelage of his father, Mark. The group’s synergy and dedication contribute to the soul-stirring performances that have become their trademark.
Mark not only sings lead for the group but also manages, books, produces, and handles numerous other responsibilities for the quartet. Tony Goforth, with almost 30 years in the gospel industry, delivers a song unlike many other tenors in the industry. Jason Gordon, who started singing at the age of 18 with The Gospelaires, currently serves as the group’s baritone and contributes to graphic design work. Jamison “Bucky” Blackwood, the newest member of the quartet, is currently learning the bass part.
The performance at Grace Baptist Church is expected to be a memorable evening of song and fellowship. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see this iconic quartet in action. Come, join the Fabulous Blackwood Quartet on June 16th and make sure to stop by and chat with them after the show!
Grace Baptist Church is located at 248 Hwy 19 in Huntsville.
