Huntsville State Park Hosts Day of Adventure and Star-Gazing to Conclude Centennial Year

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — On December 9, 2023, Huntsville State Park will host a grand finale to its Centennial celebrations, inviting the community to enjoy a day packed with outdoor activities, culminating in an evening of music, campfires, s’mores, and stargazing. The event, designed to ignite a passion for recreation and stewardship, marks the end of a year-long celebration of the park’s 100th anniversary.

A Day Full of Activities

The festivities will kick off at 10 AM with hiking and biking along the park’s scenic trails, followed by a range of recreational activities including canoeing, fishing, and archery from 1 PM to 4 PM. Food truck enthusiasts will be delighted with a variety of options available from 12 PM to 5 PM in the day-use area.

Junior Ranger Ceremony and Evening Entertainment

A highlight of the day will be the Junior Ranger swearing-in ceremony at 4 PM, where new Junior Rangers will be officially welcomed by the park’s superintendent. The ceremony is a nod to the park’s commitment to fostering the next generation of nature enthusiasts and park stewards.

As the sun sets, the celebration will shift to a more relaxed pace with music and a campfire starting at 5 PM, perfect for roasting s’mores and sharing stories. The day will conclude with a stargazing event at 7 PM, allowing visitors to marvel at the beauty of the Texas night sky.

Exploring Huntsville State Park’s Rich History

Participants are also encouraged to visit the historic Raven Lodge, built in 1942. The lodge offers a journey through time, showcasing the transformation of the area from a logging site to a thriving natural habitat and a beloved recreational space.

Free Entry and Park Information

In line with the statewide celebration of Texas State Parks’ 100 years, entry to Huntsville State Park is free on this special event day (applicable to day passes only). Visitors are advised to reserve their free day pass up to a month in advance to ensure entry.
