According to new data released by AAA, distracted driving is a growing concern nationwide. NHTSA data shows that in 2021, distracted driving was a factor in 8% of all deadly crashes across the country. In New York alone, 110 people were killed in crashes involving distracted driving.

AAA recommends that drivers:

  • Utilize the Driving Focus features on your smartphone to minimize distractions.
  • If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over to a safe location.
  • Speak up if you notice that the driver of your vehicle is distracted.
  • Keep your mobile device out of sight to avoid temptation.
  • If using GPS, program your destination before driving.
  • If you have a passenger with you, ask for their help to navigate, make a call, or send a text.
  • Refrain from calling or texting others when you know they are driving.

“We want to encourage drivers to prioritize safety on the road and take the necessary precautions to minimize distractions while driving,” said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations at AAA. “The consequences of distracted driving are not worth the risk.”

Mayor Brauninger’s proclamation is an important step in raising awareness about the issue of distracted driving and promoting safe driving practices. By working together and taking proactive steps to reduce distractions, we can all help make our roads safer for everyone.
