Donations from alumni, ambassadors and community supporters mark milestone for SHSU civic institute
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Sam Houston State University’s Center for Law, Engagement, And Politics received more than $55,000 in donations as part of its 20th anniversary celebration, according to a social media post from the center.
The donations came from Sam Houston State University, LEAP and Junior Fellows alumni, community members and current LEAP Ambassadors.
Mike Yawn, director of the Center for Law, Engagement, And Politics and clinical professor in the Department of Political Science, said 50 individuals donated to the anniversary effort.
“I am very grateful to the 50 individuals who donated for the LEAP Center’s 20th Anniversary Celebration,” Yawn said. “Approximately forty-percent of LEAP Alumni donated, an incredible number, especially considering our alumni are all under 40. It’s also worth noting that all of the LEAP Ambassadors at the time of the celebration also donated. Special thanks to Megan O’Flaherty for spearheading this event.”

According to SHSU, the LEAP Center is a Civic Institute that offers academic enrichment, professional development, civic engagement and experiential learning activities. The center offers pre-law and academic advising, internships, educational travel, volunteer opportunities, speakers and workshops.
The center’s value statement says those services support students as they navigate college and transition to graduate school, law school or the workplace. SHSU says the services are designed to help students become leading professionals and active, informed citizens.
The LEAP Center is located in the CHSS Building at Sam Houston State University. Its office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
