An Unforgettable Night of Literary Excellence at Sam Houston State University
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Award-winning and critically acclaimed authors will gather for a special event presented by the National Book Foundation, “An Evening with the National Book Awards,” on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Sam Houston State University’s (SHSU) Lowman Student Center, White Ballroom, from 6-7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Darcie Little Badger, a Lipan Apache writer and a 2021 Young People’s Literature Longlister for “A Snake Falls to Earth,” will be among the featured authors. Her book, which has received a Nebula Award, an Ignyte Award, and a Newbery Honor, explores themes both real and fantastical. Little Badger holds a PhD in oceanography and is also known for her debut novel, “Elatsoe,” which won the Locus Award for Best First Novel and was featured in TIME Magazine as one of the 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time.
Joining her is Roger Reeves, a 2022 Poetry Finalist for “Best Barbarian,” who is also the winner of the Griffin Poetry Prize and Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. A Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellow for 2021-2022, Reeves has received numerous accolades including a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation.
Marytza K. Rubio, Vice President of Community & Culture at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, rounds out the panel with her debut story collection, “Maria, Maria,” which has been longlisted for the 2022 National Book Award in Fiction.
The evening’s conversation will be moderated by Tomás Q. Morín, an author and associate professor at Rice University. Morín has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts and is the author of the poetry collection “Machete.”
The event is presented in partnership with SHSU’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the MFA Program in Creative Writing. Following the readings and discussion, there will be a book signing where books will be available for purchase. Further details can be accessed at www.shsu.edu/nba.
