Obituary for John Darrell Mayfield Sr. Our beloved Big John, age 63, passed away peacefully on August 29th, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. John lived a life full of simple joys and big passions. He loved the outdoors — whether it was the quiet calm of a morning spent fishing or the thrill of a successful hunting trip. Those moments gave him peace, and he shared countless stories about his adventures in nature that we’ll cherish forever. When he wasn’t outdoors, John loved music — especially classic rock and the louder the better. Going to concerts with his friends was one of his greatest joys, and he never passed up the chance to see a favorite band live. The music, the laughter, and the memories made at those shows brought him so much happiness. He was blessed to be cared for with unwavering love by his mom, Claudette, and his stepdad, Jerald Griffin. Their devotion carried him through many challenges. John was preceded in death by his father, James Mayfield Sr, his stepdad, Jerald Griffin, and brother, James Mayfield Jr. He leaves behind his mother, his adult children Andrea Allen (husband Bill) and John Mayfield Jr (wife Lisa), who were lovingly adopted and raised by Claudette and Jerald Griffin, and his adult child Robert Mayfield (wife Kristina) as well as a handful of grandbabies. He will also be remembered by many friends and family who loved his sense of humor, adventurous spirit, and the way he could light up a room with a story or a laugh. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing he is free of pain and at peace — maybe sitting by a quiet lake with a fishing pole or enjoying the greatest rock concert of all. Visitation will be held at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville on Friday, September 5th from 5pm to 8pm. Memorial Services will be held at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville on Saturday, September 6th at 10am. Interment will be held at San Jacinto Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Houston on Saturday, September 6th at 1pm. All are welcome to join the family for a gathering held at Brothers-in-Laws BBQ following Interment to celebrate his life. Please note that each guest will be responsible for their own meal.
