Sam Houston secured a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island in their opening game, thanks to Lane Brewster’s clutch performance at Don Sanders Stadium on Friday night. After being down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Jake Tatom reached on an error with one out. Brewster then hit a home run off Jon Morrison’s pitch, launching the ball deep into the right-center field to take the Bearkats to the lead.
In relief, Chandler David clinched the win, while Braden Davis closed out the game with a scoreless ninth to earn the save. Sam Houston opened the scoring with an infield single from Brewster, followed by a single through the right side by Tyler Davis, resulting in a run scored on a wild pitch.
Rhode Island managed to take the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Rob Butler off starting pitcher Cole Atkinson. However, Atkinson recovered by pitching a scoreless inning in the fifth, allowing only four hits and striking out four. Chandler David replaced Atkinson and pitched three scoreless innings to pave the way for Brewster’s heroics.
The second game of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m., while the finale will take place on Sunday at noon.
