DALLAS – Sam Houston defensive back Caleb Weaver has been named the Conference USA defensive player of the week, the league announced on Monday, following the Bearkats’ win over Hawaii.
The 2024 CUSA Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league’s media. The honor is the first for Weaver.
Weaver and the Bearkat defense held back a high-powered Rainbow Warrior passing attack on Saturday, holding UH to just 252 yards in the air in the 31-13 win. The junior from Houston picked off his first pass of the season in the second quarter, setting up a Bearkat field goal which put the home team up 17-3.
He also broke up three more passes and finished with three tackles in the game. He is currently tied for the team lead in both tackles and pass breakups through three games of 2024.
Weaver and the Bearkats will open CUSA play on Saturday when they host NM State. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Bowers Stadium.
The game will be aired on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Bearkat Sports Network.
