About Rita B. Huff Humane Society
The Rita B. Huff Humane Society has served Walker County and the surrounding region since the 1980s. The nonprofit operates as a 501(c)(3) shelter that provides adoption services, spay and neuter assistance, low-cost clinics, vaccinations, microchipping and education programs. Its mission is to promote the humane treatment of animals by offering shelter, adoption opportunities, medical services and advocacy, all while working to reduce pet overpopulation in the community.
The organization was named after Dr. Rita B. Huff, a professor at Sam Houston State University who cared for stray animals and strongly supported spay and neuter efforts. After her death, the shelter was established in her honor. Over the years, Rita B. Huff has achieved high adoption rates, finding homes for hundreds of dogs and cats annually.
The shelter receives no regular government funding and relies heavily on donations, fundraising events and volunteers. Programs like the Spay & Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) help make essential veterinary care more accessible, while adoption requirements ensure that animals are placed in safe, healthy homes.
The shelter is located at 1495 Veterans Memorial Parkway in Huntsville. More information on its services and programs is available at https://rbhhumanesociety.org/.
