Over a Decade of Influential Service in Sciences and Engineering
HUNTSVILLE, TX — Casey Cox, the Director of Development at Sam Houston State University, recently shared insights into his 14 years of service and the ongoing contributions to the university, particularly in the College of Sciences and Engineering. In an engaging conversation, Cox detailed the significant strides made in various university projects and his deep commitment to the Huntsville community.
Born in Waller, Texas, and an alum of Texas A&M, Cox quickly felt at home at SHSU, where he completed his master’s degree and met his wife. His role at the university primarily focuses on the College of Sciences and Engineering, where he has been instrumental in advancing educational and community engagement initiatives.
Cox discussed several key projects that have become integral parts of SHSU, such as the developments at Gibbs Ranch. The ranch serves as a multifaceted facility providing practical and academic opportunities for students in the School of Agricultural Sciences. “It’s a Swiss army knife for the department,” Cox described, highlighting its versatile use from hosting FFA events to academic classes on various agricultural topics.
Another pride point for Cox is the university’s new observatory, equipped with one of the top telescopes in the nation, enhancing both student learning and public engagement. The observatory had its ribbon-cutting recently, marking it as a pinnacle of community and educational synergy.
Cox also emphasized the importance of the university’s engagement with first-generation students, noting that SHSU plays a crucial role in offering them their first experience of a college campus. “That first initial contact we have with a student is huge,” he stated, underscoring the transformative potential of such experiences.
His dedication extends beyond the university premises. Cox is actively involved in the Huntsville community, including serving on the city council and coaching local youth baseball teams. His philosophy of being deeply invested wherever you live drives his efforts both at the university and in community service.
The recent annual Day of Giving was another highlight Cox brought up, with the event surpassing expectations by raising nearly $300,000. These funds are pivotal for fostering the university’s growth and ensuring students can graduate without the burden of debt, a goal Cox passionately supports.
As SHSU continues to expand and touch more lives, Casey Cox remains a cornerstone of both the university’s achievements and its future aspirations. His story is a testament to the impact one individual can have on an educational institution and its surrounding community, continually pushing for growth and inclusivity at every level.
