Wynne Home’s Empty Bowls Event Unites Community

The Wynne Home recently hosted the annual Empty Bowls event, a community-driven initiative aimed at combating hunger, with resounding success. Attendees gathered to enjoy a variety of soups and sandwiches while contributing to a noble cause. The event was organized to support the Senior Center of Walker County, and it drew significant attention with more than $6,000 in donations.

Stacey Loll, the Executive Director of the Senior Center of Walker County, expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support received. “It means the world to us because it is a collaborative effort,” she stated. “The Wynne Home in the city of Huntsville sponsors it and has been very gracious to us over the years.”

The funds raised during the Empty Bowls event will significantly aid the Senior Center’s efforts in providing essential services to senior adults in Walker County. Loll highlighted the various ways these funds would be utilized, including the provision of crisis and emergency assistance.

Moreover, Loll emphasized the importance of community involvement in sustaining their mission. “The businesses, the restaurants that contribute, they don’t have to, and they do. So they’re the ones who provide all the food, and they’re also invested in this,” she noted.

The success of the event was made possible through the generous support of sponsors such as Sam’s Table, Potato Shack, Five Loaves Deli, City Hall,H-E-B, Entergy and The Huntsville High School Culinary Department.

In addition to financial contributions, board members Linda McKenzie and Alice Ellisor spearheaded an initiative to involve the senior community in a creative endeavor. Over the past two years, they facilitated painting sessions where seniors at the center could personalize their own bowls for the event. This endeavor not only provided financial support but also fostered a sense of community engagement and camaraderie.

As the event concluded, Loll expressed her appreciation for the ongoing support and pledged to continue the center’s mission of eradicating hunger among senior adults in Walker County.

The Empty Bowls event serves as a reminder of the power of collective action in addressing societal challenges, reaffirming the community’s commitment to supporting its most vulnerable members.
