Karen Altom of Postcards Magazine honored as December 2024 Hometown Hero for her impact on Huntsville’s community.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Karen Altom, founder of Postcards Magazine, was recently named Huntsville’s Hometown Hero for December 2024. The recognition, presented by Hello Huntsville, highlights Altom’s contributions to local businesses and her commitment to connecting communities through print media.
The surprise announcement took place at the Olive Garden in Huntsville, where Altom was dining unaware of the honor. Rob Hipp of Hello Huntsville led the presentation, delivering a certificate of recognition and a cupcake courtesy of Two Blondes in a Bakery.
Altom, clearly moved, reflected on her deep love for Huntsville and its surrounding areas.
“I love the people that make up this community, and businesses — that’s where my heart is,” Altom said. “Helping small businesses and people who are trying to make a living for their families, and helping Huntsville be a place where you can raise a family — it’s my favorite thing to do.”
Altom founded Postcards Magazine in 2011 with a mission to spotlight the positive stories in the community. What began as a quarterly publication quickly grew into a monthly staple, with the Lake Conroe Edition added in 2012 to serve an expanding readership. Recently, Postcards introduced the Eastex Edition, covering the Cleveland area, further cementing its role in connecting communities.
Today, Altom’s publications collectively print over 70,000 magazines each month. The anonymous nomination described Altom as “thoughtful, caring, and a true champion for the community.” It also noted that Altom views Postcards as “God’s magazine,” a reflection of her faith-driven approach to serving others.
Altom’s dedication to promoting small businesses and uplifting local stories has had a significant impact on the Huntsville community, often without seeking recognition herself.
“We’re proud to honor Karen as our December 2024 Hometown Hero,” Hipp said during the presentation. “She’s helped so many people, and today, the spotlight is on her.”
The Hometown Heroes initiative by Hello Huntsville celebrates individuals who make a difference in the local community through service, leadership, and kindness.
“Karen Altom embodies the spirit of Huntsville,” Hipp said. “Her work with Postcards Magazine has been invaluable to the community she loves so much.”
