Huntsville Lady Hornets Basketball is back in the game! After a 12-year hiatus, they’ve managed to make it to the UIL regional finals in style. The Lady Hornets scored a 55-50 victory against Princeton, dominating in the paint to secure their spot in the next round. Despite Princeton’s valiant effort to make a comeback in the final quarter, Huntsville held its nerve, and they never gave up the lead. Huntsville’s head coach, LaToya Bennett, was overjoyed with the team’s performance and credited their hard work for the win.
The Lady Hornets’ success was a result of their strong defense and ability to secure rebounds, which led to second-chance points and eliminated Princeton’s opportunities to score. Senior Ja’Navia Gage led the way with a double-double of 23 points and 18 rebounds, including 10 offensive rebounds. Junior Mahalia Twine also played a crucial role, helping to direct the team’s offense in the early stages of the game and scoring 12 points with four assists and a steal.
Now, Lady Hornets Basketball has its sights set on the regional finals and a chance to play against either Crandall or undefeated Mt. Pleasant. But first, they need to rest and recharge to ensure they’re ready to face their next challenge. Coach Bennett stressed the importance of reviewing their opponents’ sets to prepare for the next round. With the team’s strong work ethic and positive energy, they’re looking forward to the next game and trusting the process to lead them to victory.
