Trommetter’s Stellar Performance and Team’s Solid Effort Highlight Success at Laredo Country Club, Despite Illinois State’s Dominance

LAREDO –Hugo Trommetter turned in a top-10 finish and the Sam Houston Bearkat men’s golf team finished in a three-way tie for fifth place as a team on the final day of the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club.
Trommetter fired a 1-under score of 71 in his final round, anchored by a 3-under back nine, to finish at –6 for the week, a mark good for a tie for ninth place in the 17-team field. Bret Gray was just a shot behind for the week after leading the Kats with a third-round score of 70, carding birdies on five of his final nine holes of the day to finish at –4 for the week in a tie for 15th.
As a team, Illinois State ran away from the rest of the field, finishing at –32 for the week. The Redbirds finished 16 shots better than second-place Lipscomb and were led by the tournament’s individual champion, Valentin Peugnet, who shot 68-64-67 for a five-shot victory.
For Sam Houston, Josh German and Gene Chaikangwal fired matching even-par 72s, while Ting-Wei Hsieh closed out his week with a +2 score of 74. Hsieh was the third Kat to finish under par for the week at –1 in a tie for 26th, while Chaikangwal tied for 35th at +1 and German in 44th at +4.
The Kats will now be off until March 11-12 when they travel to Lafayette, La., to take part in the annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
