Sam Houston State University is celebrating a historic enrollment milestone, welcoming the largest first-time freshman class in its history for Fall 2026. As of Aug. 19, the first day of classes, first-time freshman enrollment reached 3,567 students, representing an 8.7% increase over Fall 2025. The university's overall first-time freshman cohort, which includes students who began their studies during the summer term, has grown to a record 3,662 students. This achievement surpasses the previous record set in Fall 2023 by 1.7%, underscoring the university's continued success in attracting and enrolling new students.

“Our university has been proactive in addressing the challenges higher education faces today, and I think that is reflected in our first-day enrollment numbers,” University President Alisa White said. “I am proud of the work that everyone has put in, from telling the university’s story as a place that offers great educational programs and an exceptional student experience to introducing prospective students to our beautiful campus, everyone has played a part in helping SHSU grow.”

Beyond marking a university record, the growth advances SHSU’s mission to serve Texas by educating more students and helping meet the state’s growing need for a skilled, educated workforce.

The university has also expanded pathways to higher education by expanding the family income threshold from $40,000 to $100,000 for the Bearkat Promise Program, which fully covers mandatory tuition and fees for up to 15 credit hours for eligible freshmen and transfer students. Paired with the Bearkat Advantage Program that has been established with eight partner school districts, the university has opened more pathways to higher education.

These early connections continue thanks to the collaborative efforts of the university’s Enrollment Marketing and Communications, Admissions and Strategic Enrollment Innovations offices in developing and implementing an enrollment outreach initiative. This effort brought their internal strategies to third-party marketing partners to maintain communication with students from the moment they inquire about program offerings to celebrating with them when the admission letter hits their mailbox.

“When it comes to recruiting college students in the digital era, establishing real connections and maintaining them is key,” said Heather Thielemann, senior vice president for Strategic Enrollment and Innovation. “With this in mind, our team came together to ensure our communications with prospective students were consistent, clear, helpful and celebrated their progress through the application process.”

Among these communications were reminders to those with incomplete applications to guide them through what materials are needed, a helping hand that turned prospective students into members of the record-breaking incoming class.

The guidance and support doesn’t stop once students arrive on campus. There are programs such as Bearkat Kickoff and Welcome Week that provide a warm welcome to their new home. It’s during these events that students connect with peers and learn where to go for assistance when they need it.

As their education journey continues, support programs such as the First-Generation Center help connect all the students with the resources they need. Paired with the tutoring services offered by the Academic Success Center and the guidance of their academic advisors at the SAM Center, students of all classifications benefit from the backing of their Bearkat community.
