Annual fundraiser brings world-class chili cooks, live entertainment, and community spirit to Josey Scout Lodge.

Chilly at the Lodge: A Huntsville Tradition

The Josey Scout Lodge is gearing up to host its annual Chilly at the Lodge fundraiser on February 1. Known for blending world-class chili with community spirit, this event has grown into a signature gathering for Huntsville residents and visitors alike.

A World-Class Chili Competition

This year’s event features a sanctioned International Chili Society (ICS) cook-off, where competitors vie for spots in the ICS World Championship. Don Cullum, a seasoned chili competitor and 1983 Sam Houston State University alum, shared the significance of the event.

“This is our fourth year, and it’s become one of the best cook-offs in the country,” Cullum said. “We have cooks from Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, Michigan, and more, including six former world champions.”

The cook-off includes four categories: Traditional Red Chili, Chili Verde, Homestyle Chili, and Vegetarian Chili. Cullum added, “Each category offers something unique, and the winners will qualify for the ICS World Championship later this year.”

Community Divisions for All Ages

For locals, the event offers two community divisions: Adult and Youth (ages 10-17). “We want everyone to feel welcome to participate,” said Carla Christian, event organizer and Josey Scout Lodge supporter. “You don’t have to compete against the pros. You can cook in the community division and still be part of the excitement.”

Entertainment and Activities

The event isn’t just about chili. Live entertainment will feature a variety of performances, including rock, gospel, country, and even a juggler. Vendors will set up shop, offering crafts, food, and unique finds.

“For families, there’s plenty to do,” Christian said. “Kids’ activities, chili tastings, and a vendor market make this a wholesome, all-day event.”

The Chili Family Spirit

Cullum emphasized the camaraderie among chili cooks: “These are some of the friendliest people you’ll meet. They’ll share cooking tips, offer samples, and make everyone feel welcome.”

He also noted the strict rules for sanctioned cook-offs: “Everything must be cooked on-site within a three-hour window. It’s a level playing field, and it brings out the best in everyone.”

Perfect Weather Forecast

After years of battling challenging weather, this year’s forecast promises sunny skies and a high of 66°F. “We prayed for perfect chili weather, and it looks like we’re getting it,” Christian said with a laugh.

Tickets and More Information

Chili tastings start at 11 a.m., with vendor booths opening at 9 a.m. A $5 tasting kit allows attendees to sample six chilis, while a $20 wristband offers unlimited tastings.
