FCA Piney Woods West Builds Faith, Leadership Through Athletics Across Walker County

Local FCA leaders emphasize relationships, discipleship, and consistency as ministry grows in schools and colleges

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Piney Woods West area is continuing to expand its presence across Walker County and surrounding communities, focusing on discipleship, mentorship and relationship-based ministry among students, athletes and coaches.

Operating under the national mission of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCA Piney Woods West serves local middle schools, high schools and college athletes by creating spaces where faith and athletics intersect. Through regular huddles, one-on-one discipleship and leadership development, the organization seeks to reach students where they already gather.

Leadership Rooted in Relationships

The Piney Woods West area is supported by a local leadership team that includes Angela Valis, along with staff members Josh Smith and Leah Alberto‑Leroux.

Rather than relying solely on large events, the team emphasizes consistency and personal connection. Weekly huddles led by coaches and teachers provide students with opportunities to explore faith, ask questions and build community in familiar settings.

“We don’t see ourselves as replacing local churches,” Valis said. “Our role is to come alongside schools, coaches and students, building relationships and pointing them toward Christ.”

Impact in Local Schools

FCA huddles are active across multiple campuses in the Piney Woods West area, including Walker County schools. In some smaller districts, participation reaches a significant portion of the student population, highlighting strong engagement among students and staff.

Local coaches and educators often serve as huddle leaders, supported by FCA staff who provide curriculum, encouragement and training. This model allows the ministry to remain present even when staff cannot be physically on campus each week.

“The leadership already exists in these schools,” Smith said. “We’re often just resourcing what God is already doing.”

College Ministry and Retreats

In addition to high school and middle school outreach, FCA Piney Woods West maintains a growing college ministry, particularly among student-athletes. College huddles and discipleship groups provide ongoing support during a formative stage of life.

A key component of the college ministry is FCA’s annual college retreat, which brings together students from across Texas for a weekend focused on worship, teaching and spiritual renewal. Local staff members help lead and mentor students during the retreat, which many participants describe as a pivotal experience in their faith journey.

Alberto-Leroux said the retreat environment allows students to step away from daily pressures and refocus. “Getting out of the normal routine gives students space to listen, reflect and grow,” she said.

Supporting Coaches and Families

Beyond student ministry, FCA Piney Woods West places an emphasis on serving coaches and their families. The organization recognizes the demands placed on educators and athletic staff and seeks to offer encouragement, prayer and practical support.

“Coaches pour into students constantly,” Valis said. “We want them to know they’re not alone and that someone is walking with them.”

This approach includes informal check-ins, prayer support and relationship-building rather than structured programming alone.

Community Support and Partnership

Like many local ministries, FCA Piney Woods West relies on community support to continue its work. Prayer partnerships, individual donations and church support help fund resources, events and staff presence across schools.

The organization also invites community members to stay informed and involved through its website and social media platforms.
