Huntsville Memorial Hospital backs Golf for the “Girls” Charity Tournament to support free mammograms for local women.

HUNTSVILLE, TX — The Huntsville community is preparing for a significant event that combines the excitement of golf with a meaningful cause. The Golf for the “Girls” Charity Tournament is scheduled for Monday, September 16, 2024, at Elkins Lake. This event promises not only a day of fun and competition but also a chance to make a profound impact on the lives of women in the area.

The tournament is being organized to raise funds for the Huntsville Women’s Imaging Center, which aims to provide free mammograms to women who are uninsured or underinsured. The initiative is particularly focused on supporting those who might otherwise forego essential screenings due to financial constraints.

Nancy King, the Tournament Chair, has been a passionate advocate for this cause since 2017. Her commitment began with 30-mile walks to raise money for similar initiatives, and now, she has brought her efforts closer to home. “This tournament is about more than just golf,” King said. “It’s about supporting the women in our community who need access to life-saving screenings but may not have the means to afford them.”

The event will follow a 4-person scramble format, with categories for men, couples, and women’s flights. The entry fee is set at $600 per team, which covers participation in the tournament, use of a golf cart, prizes, tee gifts, and both breakfast and lunch. Participants are expected to check in at 8 a.m., with the tournament kicking off at 9:30 a.m. in a shotgun start.

One of the highlights of the tournament will be the Hole-in-One Contest, where participants have the chance to win a $10,000 cash prize. Additionally, several skills contests will take place throughout the day, including competitions for Closest to the Pin, Straightest Drive, and a Putting Contest. These contests are designed to add an extra layer of excitement and competition to the event, with separate categories for men and women.

Huntsville Memorial Hospital is the platinum event sponsor for the tournament, underscoring their commitment to women’s health in the community. Brian Goldgar, Director of Business Development at Huntsville Memorial Hospital, emphasized the critical importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer. “Preventative medicine is the best medicine,” Goldgar said. “When you catch cancer early, the treatment options are broader and more effective. This event is a vital part of ensuring that all women in our community have access to these critical screenings.”

Goldgar’s remarks highlight the broader mission behind the tournament—ensuring that every woman in Huntsville has access to potentially life-saving mammograms. The tournament is more than a day on the golf course; it is a concerted effort to raise awareness and funds for a cause that affects countless lives.

For those interested in supporting the event but unable to participate in the tournament itself, sponsorship opportunities are available. Hole sponsorships are offered for $500, providing local businesses and individuals a chance to contribute to the cause and gain visibility at the event.

The event is expected to draw significant attention, with teams from across the region expected to participate. The format of the tournament and the array of contests ensure that players of all skill levels can enjoy the day while contributing to a worthwhile cause. The tournament will be a full-day event, with breakfast served at check-in and lunch provided as participants wrap up their rounds.

Nancy King, reflecting on the origins of the tournament, mentioned how the support from Huntsville Memorial Hospital and the local community has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. “We believe that this is just the beginning,” King said. “This tournament has the potential to grow year after year, making an even greater impact.”
