Presented by Mattress Firm Huntsville, the award recognizes the Eagle Scout and firefighter whose service prompted three community nominations.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — James Cauthen thought he was spending another day at the Crabbs Prairie Volunteer Fire Department. Instead, he received a surprise visit recognizing the work he does for others.
Hello Huntsville’s Rob Hipp, accompanied by Cauthen’s father, Billy, arrived to announce Cauthen as the September 2026 Hometown Hero, presented by Mattress Firm Huntsville.
Cauthen, a 2025 Huntsville High School graduate, volunteers with Crabbs Prairie and was recently hired as a full-time firefighter and emergency medical technician with the Liberty Fire Department.
“I don’t want the recognition. I just like helping people,” Cauthen said.
Three nominations recognize a willingness to serve
Cauthen received three nominations, the first time a recipient has received that many in the Hello Huntsville Hometown Hero program, Hipp said.
The nominations described someone willing to respond to emergencies day or night and help at community events.
One nominator praised his involvement with two fire departments and his response to fire and medical calls. Another described him as a firefighter always ready to help.
The third nomination came from one of his sisters, who pointed to his commitment to the community where he grew up.
“He truly is the best,” she wrote. “He is always ready to get up and help the community, whether it’s going to a fire, going on an EMT call, or going to a community event.”
Scouting helped prepare Cauthen for service
Before becoming a firefighter, Cauthen earned the rank of Eagle Scout after 10 years with Pack and Troop 98.
During that time, he camped more than 100 nights, hiked 118 miles and completed 132 hours of community service while also playing football and tennis.
His goal was to become a firefighter. With his recent hiring in Liberty, that goal has become his full-time work.
“It’s phenomenal,” Cauthen said. “I mean, I’m now a full-time firefighter. I love it every day.”
A father’s example sparked his interest
For Cauthen, the connection to firefighting began with his father, who he said has been a volunteer since 1999.
His father brought him to the Crabbs Prairie station as a child, introducing him to a place that would become part of his own future.
“I think that’s what sparked the passion,” Cauthen said.
Billy also spoke about the department’s influence on his life.
“This place kind of helped raise me and make me the person I am,” he said.
Cauthen encourages young people to keep working
Asked what he would tell another young person hoping to follow a similar path, Cauthen emphasized persistence.
“Nothing worth having is easy,” he said.
Becoming a full-time firefighter has given him more reason to keep improving, he said.
Hipp presented Cauthen with a September 2026 Hometown Hero certificate, along with a strawberry muffin and oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies.
Cauthen closed with another reminder for anyone pursuing a goal.
“You just gotta keep working hard for what you want.”
