STEPHENVILLE — An opportunity was present for Sam Houston baseball to seize the WAC regular season title this Saturday, but they fell short, succumbing to a 6-4 defeat against Tarleton at the TSU Baseball Complex.
The Bearkats, with their season tally at 33-22 (22-8 WAC), concluded the season slightly trailing Grand Canyon, ending up in the second seed for the upcoming WAC Tournament set to take place in Mesa, Arizona from May 23-27.
Tarleton took an early lead, scoring the first run in the opening inning. However, Sam Houston quickly rebounded in the second inning when both Myles Jefferson and Walker Janek scored due to a throwing error.
Tarleton reclaimed the lead, scoring in the third and twice in the fourth innings. The Texans extended their lead to 5-2 after an RBI single in the sixth inning.
The Bearkats reentered the competition in the seventh inning when Jefferson and Joe Redfield earned two walks. Justin Wishkoski then drove a two-run double into the left-center field, bringing Sam Houston back within striking distance.
Despite having a tying run poised on the base in the eighth inning, Sam Houston could not capitalize. Tarleton added a buffer run in the same inning. Unable to break the order in the ninth, the Bearkats had to concede the victory to the Texans.
