Retired professor and veteran serves community through faith and support for fellow veterans

HUNTSVILLE, TX — On a recent episode of “Good Morning Huntsville,” Dr. Richard Henriksen Jr., the American Legion Post 95 chaplain, shared his inspiring journey and the significant impact he’s made in the community.

Dr. Henriksen, a retired Sam Houston State University professor, moved to Huntsville in 2006 after a career spanning over three decades in mental health counseling. “I came to Huntsville for the first time in 1996 as a student at Texas A&M University-Commerce to attend workshops,” he said. “I fell in love with Huntsville and always wanted to return.”

After obtaining his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate in clinical mental health counseling, he returned to Texas and dedicated himself to teaching and community service. “At the Good Shepherd Mission, I provided free counseling services with my students,” he explained. “Seeing people change their lives is the joy I get out of life.”

Dr. Henriksen also has a rich military background, having served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. “I volunteered to go to Vietnam, but my service was primarily in Guam,” he said. His commitment to service continued after his military career, as he actively engaged with local youth and community programs.

“I’ve always chosen to work with young people, particularly those struggling,” Dr. Henriksen remarked. “I tell them, you can rise above your circumstances and use your experiences as strengths.”

His role as chaplain for the American Legion Post 95 allows him to extend his service further. “Being a chaplain is more than saying a prayer at a meeting,” he stated. “It involves visiting veterans in nursing homes, officiating funerals, and providing counseling services.”

Dr. Henriksen was appointed chaplain about two and a half years ago. “The post commander asked if I could take on this role because of my love for God and service,” he recalled. “I took the position with great joy in my heart and hit the ground running.”

He emphasizes the importance of spiritual support within the veteran community. “In the American Legion, we do everything for God and country. Our faith is central to what we do,” he said.

Dr. Henriksen invites the community to a special event at Post 95. “We’re hosting ‘Breakfast, Spiritual Growth, and Fun’ from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sundays,” he announced. “It will be a smoke-free and alcohol-free environment, perfect for families.”

As he looks to the future, Dr. Henriksen aims to continue building a supportive environment for veterans and their families. “If you’re a veteran or a member of a veteran family, we would love to welcome you into the American Legion,” he encouraged.
