Interdenominational Bible study offers women a welcoming space to grow in faith and build connections through Scripture.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — A long-running Bible study group in Huntsville is gearing up for the new year and inviting participants to join its enriching sessions starting January 8. The Joy of Living Bible Study, hosted at University Heights Baptist Church, offers an interdenominational space for women to explore Scripture, foster fellowship, and find encouragement in their faith journeys.
Karen Gillikin, a Huntsville resident of nearly 40 years and a group leader, recently shared insights about the program during an interview on Good Morning Huntsville. “This Bible study has been such a blessing to so many,” Gillikin said. “It started here in Huntsville in 1990 under the leadership of Barbara Sue Larrison. She led the group faithfully for over 30 years before her passing three years ago. Since then, a dedicated team has continued her legacy.”
The Joy of Living Bible Study began in California in 1971, founded by Doris Greig. Gillikin explained that Greig, a young mother who spent a year bedridden, used her time in prayer and study to write Bible studies. Her work eventually grew into an international program, now used in nearly every U.S. state and several countries.
The Huntsville study welcomes women from all walks of life. “We call ours the Ladies Interdenominational Bible Study,” Gillikin said, adding that the group fosters an inclusive, welcoming environment. While the program is open to anyone, the Huntsville chapter currently focuses on women, offering them a space to connect spiritually and personally.
The upcoming session will continue the study of highlights from the New Testament, providing an overview of each book. “We’ll explore the themes, authors, and audiences of each book,” Gillikin said. “This study is perfect for anyone—whether you’re new to the Bible or have been studying it for years. It’s the living Word of God, and there’s always something new to learn.”
Weekly meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. with small group discussions, where participants share insights from daily lessons. At 10:30 a.m., the groups gather for a lecture led by rotating leaders. “The lectures provide an overview and timeless truths from the week’s study, helping participants apply what they’ve learned to their lives,” Gillikin explained.
The group currently includes about 50 women, divided into small groups of 10 to 12. New members are encouraged to join at any time. “We’ve had several new participants this past year, and we’re always excited to welcome more,” Gillikin said.
The program is designed to encourage deeper relationships among participants while maintaining a dynamic, inclusive atmosphere. Groups are restructured each session to help members connect with new people. “We pray over the group assignments and trust that God leads us in placing people together,” Gillikin said.
Though childcare is not currently available, Gillikin expressed a hope to attract younger women and mothers in the future. “We’d love to find a way to offer childcare so more young women can join us,” she said.
The Bible study meets at University Heights Baptist Church but is not affiliated with any specific denomination. “You don’t have to attend University Heights or any church at all to join us,” Gillikin emphasized. “This is a space for everyone, no matter where you are in your spiritual walk.”
Gillikin also highlighted the evangelical focus of the program. “Every study includes the plan of salvation, and participants are often encouraged to reflect on their relationship with Jesus. It’s an opportunity to deepen your faith and share it with others,” she said.

“Study with delight, not as a task,” Gillikin said, quoting from the Joy of Living website. “Come with devotion, and you’ll find joy in growing closer to the Lord.”
