Commissioners recognize the impact of domestic violence and SAAFE House’s efforts to support survivors and raise awareness.

In alignment with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Walker County Commissioners Court officially proclaimed October as a month dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence. The proclamation brought attention to the wide-reaching effects of domestic violence and its impact on individuals and the broader community. During the session, Tammy Farkas, Community Relations Director, and Tracy Stoudt, Executive Director of SAAFE House, were present to witness the proclamation signing.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month was first observed in October 1987 to bring attention to the issue of domestic violence, celebrate survivors, and connect advocates across the nation. This month aims to spread awareness and drive change, urging communities to work together to stop violence before it starts. By declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Walker County Commissioners joined a national effort to address the serious and often hidden issue of domestic violence.

The proclamation highlighted that domestic violence is a widespread issue that crosses economic, racial, and societal boundaries. It emphasized the vital role of organizations like SAAFE House in providing support and resources to survivors. SAAFE House has been a key player in advocating for victims’ rights and providing services across Walker, Trinity, San Jacinto, and Polk counties, such as emergency shelters, legal advocacy, and community education.

Since its formation in 1984 as the Walker County Family Violence Council, SAAFE House has grown into a comprehensive support network for those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. Offering services that include a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelters, and counseling, SAAFE House is dedicated to empowering survivors to lead lives free from abuse.
