The Rita B. Huff Humane Society of Walker County is taking a giant leap forward with its new facility at 1495 Veterans Memorial Parkway, a project that significantly expands its capacity and capabilities in animal care. The new shelter is a testament to the society’s growth and dedication, featuring a substantial increase to 60 kennels, up from the current 18. This expansion means the society can provide refuge to a larger number of homeless animals, enhancing their chances of finding forever homes.
We spoke to an employee and in addition to the increased kennel space, the new location is thoughtfully designed with animal welfare in mind, boasting 2 cat rooms, 2 surgery rooms, and 2 exam rooms. These facilities will enable the society to offer comprehensive care, including medical and surgical services, ensuring that animals receive the best possible treatment and rehabilitation before being adopted.
One of the most innovative features of the new shelter is the introduction of a “Catio,” a patio designed specifically for cats. This unique space will allow cats to enjoy the outdoors safely, offering them fresh air and sunshine without the risk of escaping. The Catio is an example of the society’s commitment to not only the physical health of the animals in its care but also their mental and emotional well-being.
