Obituary

Norman E. Sugg Sr. February 21, 1940 – September 25, 2026 Norman E. Sugg Sr., 86, Huntsville, Texas entered into his heavenly home on September 25, 2026. He was born in Houston, Texas on February 21,1940 to Norman W. Sugg and Lillian Sugg. Norman attended Spring Branch High School and later graduated from the University of Houston. While working in Houston for NASA, Norman met Judy Nimmo, the love of his life.

They were married on June 21,1968 at Second Baptist Church in Houston. Norman and Judy moved to Austin for work, and this is where they had their son, Gene. In 1971 they moved to Judy’s hometown of Huntsville, Texas where they would spend the next 54 years. Norman knew Christ from an early age and his faith was the foundation of his life. Upon moving to Huntsville, Norman and Judy joined First Baptist Church in 1971 and their lives revolved around the activities and friends at church.

Norman spent many years teaching youth Sunday school and he spent hours driving around Huntsville picking up kids who had no transportation to church. He knew that everyone needed to know Jesus and he put his belief into action through service. He was a long time Deacon at First Baptist and was proud to lend his gifts and talents to artwork projects for the church and designed many pieces that were sold as part of fundraisers.

Norman was an artist at heart and dedicated countless hours at Sam Houston State learning new techniques that he could apply to his projects. He and Judy learned how to fire pottery and set up a full studio to decorate and fire pieces for family and friends. In the early 70’s he was part of a group that discussed, researched and planned an event that would eventually become Fair on the Square in downtown Huntsville.

Since the Fair began, he has always been proud to have contributed to a community event that still lives on today. Norman found his true passion when he began teaching art for Conroe ISD. He was instrumental in helping many students win scholarships at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and his students’ art garnered countless wins and ribbons at regional art shows. He was most proud of the students that were able to attend college with these scholarships and beamed with pride when they would reach out to him later in life.

Norman taught for almost 3 decades. After retirement, Norman and Judy enjoyed many trips to Branson, Missouri and became interested in family history, which prompted vacations across the country finding and visiting relatives. When their grandchildren arrived, their focus shifted to walks in Sam Houston Park to visit the ducks, collecting tadpoles, flying kites, playing games and fully embracing being a Grandmommy and Grandaddy.

After Judy’s death, Norman moved to Creekside Senior Living where he quickly made friends with the staff and other residents. The staff became like family to him and the joy he shared through artwork, puzzles, stories and laughter were a blessing for everyone. Norman is preceded in death by his wife, Judy, his parents, Norman and Lillian Sugg and his sister Janice. Norman is survived by his son, Gene Sugg and his wife Stacy and two grandchildren, Avery and Alec Sugg.

Services for Norman will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Huntsville, Texas. Visitation will take place from 10:00-11:00 followed by his funeral service from 11:00-12:00. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, you may make a donation to Creekside Senior Living in Norman’s name at https://www.mrccreekside.org or to the First Baptist Church Huntsville at https://fbchuntsville.org. “I am the way, the truth and the life.” John 14:6
