SHSU Proposes $60 Million Upgrade with Enhanced Facilities and Media Center

Press Release from GoBearkats.com

HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State University is submitting design documents for Bowers Stadium press box replacement and stadium improvements to the Texas State University System Board of Regents for consideration during its quarterly meeting in August.

In April, the university announced the project will be completed by Page Southerland Page, Inc. in collaboration with architecture firm, DLR Group.

“Once Page Southerland Page, Inc. and DLR Group were announced as our architecture partners, we immediately went to work on the design of Bowers Stadium,” said Director of Athletics Bobby Williams. “This has really been the fun part of this process seeing everything start to come together. Once the project is approved, I look forward to working with Hoar Construction to share our full vision with our fans and stakeholders who have helped make this possible.”

Pending approval the improved press box will span approximately 47,000 gross square feet, boasting an additional 13,000 square feet of covered exterior space, culminating in a total of approximately 60,000 square feet.

The proposed redesign will include updated concessions and restrooms, premium seating options and suites with access to outdoor balcony seating. Additionally, a state-of-the-art media center will be integrated, elevating the gameday coverage across television, radio and print platforms.

The $60 million stadium upgrade will be financed through a combination of bonds and donor contributions. Pending Board approval, construction is estimated to begin following the conclusion of the 2024 Bearkat Football season.
